History Of SAMBAR
Sambar is one of the most famous dishes of South India. The origin of sambar is believed to be connected to the Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Shivaji Maharaj.
According to history, Sambhaji Maharaj once tried to prepare amti, a traditional Maharashtrian dal. Since kokum was not available, he used tamarind instead. He also added vegetables and spices to improve the taste. This new dish became very flavorful and unique.
When this dish was served, it was named “Sambhar” in honour of Sambhaji Maharaj. Over time, the name became “Sambar.”
Later, sambar became popular in the royal kitchens of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu and spread across South India. Each region added its own style, vegetables, and spice combinations, creating different varieties of sambar.
Today, sambar is an essential part of South Indian cuisine and is erived with rice, idli, dosa, vada, and pongal. It is not only for its taste but also for its nutritional value.
